How to Use Hair Mask?
Hey everyone! What's up? My name is Melinda, and I'm a Sephora Beauty Director. This one's for all of you beauty newbies out there. Today, I want to show you how to use a hair mask—super quick and easy. Some of you might not have tried it before, so all you need is your favorite hair mask, a wide-tooth comb, or even just your fingers, and we can jump right in.
Step 1: Start with Shampooed Wet Hair
First, you want to start with shampooed, wet hair. Make sure to take out any excess water because you don't want it to drown the mask that you're using. You really want your mask to be able to penetrate your hair, so it doesn't have to be sopping wet—just freshly washed. You can see my hair is still wet from shampooing. I like to split it in half. You don't have to split it in half, especially if you're in the shower and don't have a clip handy, but it just helps make sure you are coating all of your hair and not missing anything.
Step 2: Apply the Hair Mask
Now we're going to work on the bottom half first. The mask I'm using today is from Color Wow in collaboration with Chris Appleton, a celebrity hairstylist. This mask is called the Money Mask for super glossy, expensive-looking hair. That's totally what Chris Appleton is known for—that really glossy, iconic look you see on a ton of celebrities these days.
I'm now going to start coating my hair with this good stuff. It's a really cool jelly texture and very thick. Take a spatula and grab a quarter-size amount for the first section. Rub that between your hands and start pulling it from the mid-shaft of your hair, maybe slightly above the mid-shaft, to the ends. The reason I'm not going all the way to my roots is that I have fine hair, and it tends to get weighed down easily. This mask is pretty weightless in that sense, but avoiding the roots gives me a little more lift.
Step 3: Comb Through
Take a wide-tooth comb and do a comb-through. Be generous with the mask; it doesn't have to be sopping out of your hair, but you want to make sure you coat your hair well to get that hydrating benefit. Repeat the process on the other side with another quarter-size amount.
Step 4: Apply to the Top Half
Next, pull out your clip and work on the top half. Pull the hair forward on either side to make it easier. Apply the mask from mid-shaft to ends, using a little more product if needed. Remember, it's the Money Mask because it makes your hair look like money, not because you need to use a ton of it and spend too much money.
Step 5: Let It Sit and Rinse
Once your hair is completely coated, let it sit for three to five minutes. Then rinse and style as usual.
Additional Tips
If you have baby hair or suffer from hair splinters, be extra gentle while applying and combing through the mask. For those dealing with crazy hair days, using a hair mask like this can help tame the frizz and make your hair more manageable.
That’s it! I hope that if you haven’t tried a hair mask, you do try one out now. This is one of my favorites, and I just feel like it makes my hair look so smooth.
